Dubai: Maybe it’s the Valentine season, but an extremely large Emirati who weighs 250kg underwent a delicate stomach surgery because he said he wants to find a mate.
Mohanna Ahmad, 28, said his main motivation to lose weight was that he wanted to get married. He underwent a three-hour laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery, which cut the stomach from a three-litre bag, to a mere quarter litre size.
“An operation for a person of his size is very delicate,” said Dr N. Nallasivam, head of anaesthesiology at MedCare Hospital. He said the three-hour operation is usually not advised for people like Ahmad who are morbidly obese with a BMI of 86. BMI is body mass index.
Asked how he came to be this size, Ahmad said, “I eat too much.”
The Abu Dhabi resident who said he loves to eat ‘kabsa’ and ‘biryani’, now will live only on a liquid diet for the next three weeks. But Nallasivam said the obesity was due to hereditary reasons.
His brother said Dr Gabi Wazz, the surgeon who operated on Ahmad, had earlier advised against the operation and asked him to lose weight and come back when he’s 180 kgs. He said a doctor in Thailand had also advised Ahmad against the operation. Wazz said he was thankful to Thiqa, the only health insurance company that covers obesity treatment.
But Ahmad was determined and wanted to undergo the operation. “We were all praying that Ahmad goes through with it,” said his brother.
Ahmad said he started putting on weight when he was about 14 years old. He said he is only one who is obese in his family.
“It will be impossible for him now to overeat,” said the doctor.
“The weight reduction process will start within one to two weeks. He will lose about 20kg every month,” he said.
